Hop Sing operated his market garden in the late 1870s on Adelaide Road.[1] [2]

Due to the "offensive state of [his] Chinaman's garden on Adelaide Road, he was instructed to install 'sanitary appliances', as per local bylaws, by the Wellington City Council 'Inspector of Nuisances'.[1]
