Born in Canton, and living in Hong Kong, Ching Fan arrived to New Zealand in 1898 aboard the SS Wakatipu, aged 25. Before disembarking, she married Chin Ting. Chin Ting successfully applied to have Ching Fan's £100 Poll Tax refunded, setting legal precedent.
